ThinClients are of two types - diskless or with embedded OS
Diskless ThinClient:
A client machine that relies on the server to perform the data processing. Thin clients mostly send keyboard and mouse input to the server and receive screen output in return ThinClient is a low cost - centrally managed computer which does not have any type of Disks, CDROM etc . The server is called Application server.
ThinClient computing is not just sharing of Desktop - it is very advanced solution, where you have complete security and privacy of data. In fact it is more secured that fat client environment.
Embedded OS ThinClient:
An embedded OS thinclient does not rely on server for data processing. It contains a CF,SSD,DOM hard drives to perform data processing. Certain applications like web browser,playing audio files, office tools can be performed without actually connecting to the server.
ThinClient is suitable for:
- Office applications
- Accounting package
- Any client / server application
- ERP - even SAP can be run on ThinClients
- DOS Applications
- Playing audio and video files
Thinclient is not suitable for:
- High end graphical applications like photoshop, coral draw autocad
- Animation - 2D or 3D
- Multimedia applications
- Gaming applications
- Stand alone PC cannot be a thinclient

It supports such features as CompactPCI and the ability to boot from flash memory or CD-ROM. Released in 2001, Windows XP Embedded evolved from the embedded version of Windows NT. In 2008, its name was officially changed to Windows Embedded Standard.
Windows thin client devices are ideal for line of business applications as they support the entire range of Windows peripherals and Win32 API applications; feature a local Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and a full-fledged local IE 6.0 for running Web-based applications. -
Windows – CE: Affordable, yet productive
A version of the Windows operating system designed for small devices such as personal digital assistants (PDAs) or hand held PC's. The Windows CE graphical user interface (GUI) is very similar to Windows 95 so devices running Windows CE should be easy to operate for anyone familiar with Windows 95.
Windows CE-based thin client devices or browser terminals are equipped with Internet Explorer for Web access and can run a local terminal emulation suite. They are ideally suited for environments where the workforce needs to constantly access Web-based applications. Low on cost, but rich in functionality, CE-based terminals support many Windows drivers and peripherals.
